DearMamma partners with Liberian Cancer Society

March 15, 2021
We’re pleased to announce out latest outreach partnership in Liberia!
Treatment options in Liberia are limited. Mastectomies are often the first line of treatment, but with few oncologists in-country, these are often carried out by general surgeons. Chemotherapy is offered by only a handful of hospitals, and radiation therapy is not yet available. Those who require radiation must travel to better resourced countries – an option only open to those who can afford it.
When cases are detected early, before the cancer has metastasised, first-line treatments are more likely to be successful. They are also significantly cheaper, meaning more women are likely to pursue treatment.
Early detection is crucial to saving lives in the fights against breast cancer, but for early detection to happen, women need to know what they’re looking for.
The DearMamma app is just one of the many ways we’re working to make sure women everywhere receive the necessary information.
We also partner with organisations throughout the world, who carry out localised breast cancer awareness activities. We already have partners in Israel, Palestine, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
Now, we’re pleased to announce a new partnership in Liberia, West Africa!
The Liberian Cancer Society (LCS) is a voluntary members association who’ve long been working to raise awareness of all forms of cancer, and to mobilise additional resources for cancer treatment in-country.
With the support of The DEAR Foundation, LCS will be taking the DearMamma campaign to communities around the country, introducing women to self-checks and facilitating breast-screening events in conjunction with local medical professionals.
Together, we’re hoping to improve access to preventive healthcare information for thousands of women.
